The MRes Design program offers a platform to conduct groundbreaking, thorough design research while cultivating critical thinking and innovative research abilities. Primarily designed to prepare students for doctoral studies or research roles in cultural sectors, this course fosters intellectual exploration, pushing participants to adopt a vigorous and adaptable research methodology. Through structured modules, students acquire essential practical, communication, and transferable skills, evolving into adaptable, self-driven early-career researchers. The curriculum covers research methodologies, ethical guidelines, and professional competencies like self-organization, project coordination, scholarly writing, and presentation techniques. Collaborating with fellow MRes students across Northumbria University's Faculty of Arts, Design, and Social Sciences sparks interdisciplinary discussions and bold ideas. Participants will craft and present an original dissertation or practice-based project, showcasing their capacity to generate insightful, well-founded design research that sparks dialogue and enriches their professional field.
This program instills lifelong learning capabilities, including critical analysis, presentation techniques, and reflective evaluation—qualities highly valued by employers. Graduates will exhibit a keen understanding of scholarly work in their design specialization, proving their self-discipline, motivation, and passion for independent study. The course enhances undergraduate foundations with greater intensity, complexity, and depth while refining communication, time management, and advanced research skills. With a practical emphasis, students are urged to connect with industry and academic professionals to expand their research's influence and build a network of strategic connections. Our goal is to cultivate local talent, strengthening the region's economic, social, cultural, and intellectual assets while extending their reach into the global arena.
