Northumbria's GDL employs a hands-on, learner-centered methodology that establishes a strong foundation in key legal disciplines. The course delivers core legal principles through interactive lectures and seminar sessions. Comprehensive learning resources and textbooks are made available to assist students throughout their academic journey. Before commencing the program, participants must complete preparatory work on the English Legal System through pre-arrival materials and an orientation schedule. The curriculum mandates seven fundamental subjects recognized by legal authorities: Contract Law, Criminal Law, Equity and Trusts, European Union Law, Property Law, Public Law, and Tort Law. Additionally, all candidates must explore an elective legal specialization, with previous choices ranging from Company Law and Employment Law to more niche areas like Space Law and Sports Law. Introductory support is provided for both subject selection and legal research techniques.

Qualification Requirements
Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in any subject from a UK or Republic of Ireland Higher Education Institution or a Certificate or Academic Standing from the Law Society or the Bar Council.
Applicants who have previously studied four or more of the foundation subjects may obtain an exemption from those subjects. If you are granted a certificate of exemption, the certificate must be shown to us at enrolment. Applications for exemption should be made to the Solicitors Regulation Authority or the Bar Standards Board. Please note that students with exemptions who pass the outstanding subjects will pass the programme, but will not generally be awarded the Diploma
International applicants should have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or an approved equivalent)
