Northumbria's interior design program emphasizes creating cutting-edge interior spaces, whether through new architectural projects or repurposing existing structures while considering their external impact. Students tackle design assignments situated in both contemporary and historic settings, gaining comprehensive exposure to the interiors sector. The curriculum encompasses various commercial spaces such as entertainment venues (bars, restaurants, nightclubs), hospitality establishments (hotels), retail environments, exhibition spaces, corporate offices, cultural institutions, public areas, and theatrical/TV sets. Participants will examine everything from major architectural transformations to intricate interior details. Creative concepts emerge through historical and theoretical studies, complemented by research into site conditions, functionality, materials, branding, sensory experiences, spatial dynamics, and user engagement. All coursework reflects professional standards and utilizes diverse presentation techniques including technical drawings, digital modeling, hand sketches, and physical models. The program maintains exceptional partnerships with prominent national and international firms, enabling students to collaborate on authentic projects with industry leaders like Topshop, Gensler, John Lewis, and others. Notably, final-year students have participated in the esteemed Bauhaus Open Studios Programme in Dessau.
