Our PhD in Film Practice offers a distinctive chance to pursue filmmaking as a practice-based research endeavor.
Newcastle University is expanding its film practice initiatives through FilmCultureLab, spearheaded by acclaimed documentary director Dr. Ian McDonald. FilmCultureLab fosters an innovative approach to nonfiction film education and scholarship, viewing documentary as both artistic medium and social engagement tool for examining and transforming our historical and cultural landscape.

We provide three PhD pathways in Film Practice:
practice-led, practice-based, or theoretical research across these specializations:
documentary/non-fiction film (see faculty expertise), UK/Indian/South Asian/African documentary traditions, intersections between documentary and sociology/anthropology/cultural studies, sports documentaries
feminist filmmaking approaches, sociolinguistics in documentary, translation studies in film practice, Soviet/Russian documentary theory
critical documentary theory, historical studies of documentary movements
independent film production/distribution research, global cinema studies, Indian film scholarship, film festival analysis

Qualification Requirements

A 2:1 honours degree and preferably a merit master's degree, or an international equivalent, in a related subject, such as:
film studies, English, cultural studies, modern languages, history, sociology, art, psychology
You may need to attend an interview, which can be via Skype if necessary.
IELTS - 7.0 overall (with a minimum of 6.5 in all sub-skills)
TOEFL IBT or TOEFL IBT Special Home Edition - 100 overall (with a minimum of 21 in listening, 22 in reading, 23 in speaking, and 22 in writing)
