Our Urban Design master's and PGDip program is designed for built environment professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in urban design. This advanced degree equips you to positively impact the quality of urban spaces.
The curriculum centers on three core urban projects, each addressing vital contemporary challenges: urban renewal
residential development, public areas and community involvement
These projects are supported by theoretical and practical sessions including lectures, seminars, and workshops. With a studio-based approach, the program emphasizes self-directed learning while fostering collaborative studio culture among peers. You'll benefit from the diverse professional backgrounds within your cohort.
This Urban Design program leverages the multidisciplinary nature of its students, enhancing existing built environment skills while developing new competencies in designing within physical, social, and economic frameworks.
The course welcomes students from various fields such as: architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, real estate development, arts, and community development
Our program maintains strong connections with the Urban Design Group (UDG). Notably, one graduate received the student award at the 2014 National Urban Design Awards. Sarah Cawrse discusses her winning project "Designing Incentives for Healthy Lifestyles," which focused on improving food access, physical activity, and social interaction in Newcastle's Elswick neighborhood.
The course framework features three primary design projects examining current urban design priorities:
urban revitalization, housing solutions, public spaces/community engagement
