For both the University-led and School Direct PGCE programs, you'll attend lectures and seminars at Manchester Metropolitan while completing a minimum of 120 days in school placements across the North West region.
On campus, you'll primarily work alongside peers in your subject specialization. Interactive, practical workshops will teach you effective lesson planning and delivery techniques.
While most learning occurs within your subject group, you'll participate in critical studies lectures and professional development sessions alongside students from various disciplines.
These cross-disciplinary sessions enhance all dimensions of your teaching practice, covering essential topics like classroom management, mental health awareness, professional identity, and child protection.
The program also strengthens your academic skills through exposure to cutting-edge educational research and theory, ensuring your teaching methods remain relevant and learner-focused. Many instructors actively contribute to research and share valuable insights about its practical classroom applications.
Initial coursework focuses on developing academic skills for postgraduate study while introducing educational fundamentals and professional teaching standards.
You'll receive comprehensive guidance about program expectations and assessment timelines to help maintain organization throughout your studies.
Career preparation forms an integral part of the program, with tutors and mentors assisting with CV development and interview preparation for your first teaching position.
School placements provide opportunities to apply university learning in real classrooms, building both subject expertise and teaching confidence.
Each placement includes guidance from an experienced mentor who supports all aspects of your practical experience, from initial lesson delivery to student assessment and parent communication.
Placements expose you to diverse learners, with tailored support to adapt your teaching approaches to individual student needs.
Upon completion, you'll earn a subject-specific Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), qualifying you to teach across all school levels.
The program also awards 60 master's-level credits (of the 180 required for a full degree), which can be applied toward future advanced study and professional growth.
