This program leads the way in production design and manufacturing methodologies, uniting students from both artistic and technical disciplines to cultivate innovative approaches to manufactured product design. It encourages you to investigate and refine your personal design philosophies while grounding them in a comprehensive awareness of past, present, and emerging design trends, along with broader societal and cultural influences.
Core modules, taught by industry experts, combine theoretical design instruction with practical application through materials workshops, group discussions, one-on-one mentoring, real-world projects, and research excursions. Hands-on design work is supported by comprehensive workshops for woodworking, metalwork, ceramics, glass, and plastics, plus digital facilities for laser cutting and large-scale CNC machining.
Elective units provide cross-disciplinary collaboration opportunities, enabling joint projects with peers from various postgraduate design fields.
You'll have the freedom to examine and push boundaries in product design, pursuing groundbreaking innovations across all market segments and production scales - from bespoke craftsmanship and limited runs to digital fabrication and mass industrial manufacturing.
Your academic journey follows customized learning plans tailored to your creative goals and career aspirations. The concluding Synthesis project determines your postgraduate qualification, with the MSc emphasizing technical and functional innovation, while the MA focuses on material creativity or culturally oriented design approaches.
