The MA/MFA Performance program is a dynamic graduate course delivering hands-on, adaptable, and multidisciplinary training in performance creation. This curriculum equips students with sophisticated practical knowledge of modern performance techniques, incorporating diverse artistic and theoretical perspectives. Central to the program is fostering innovative creative work and exploring its professional development and presentation opportunities.
Additionally, MA/MFA Performance allows students to focus on either laboratory theatre or contemporary performance, or blend aspects of both while gaining real-world experience in professional arts settings. These specialized tracks undergo rigorous critical analysis and professional framing before students undertake their final capstone projects.
The laboratory theatre concentration emphasizes actor training, dramatic composition, and community-focused cultural initiatives. Participants gain exclusive access to a residency at Denmark's Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium (NTL), home to the world-famous Odin Teatret ensemble. This specialization carries an additional £2,000 fee.
The contemporary performance track concentrates on developing groundbreaking experimental works spanning radical theater, modern dance, and live art. It benefits from Manchester School of Art's celebrated cross-disciplinary environment and the city's vibrant international arts community.
