This program leads the way in production design and manufacturing methodologies, uniting students from both artistic and technical disciplines to cultivate innovative approaches to product design for industrial production. It encourages you to investigate and refine your personal design processes and philosophies while grounding them in a comprehensive awareness of past, present, and emerging design trends, along with broader societal and cultural influences.
Core modules, taught by production design experts, include theoretical and practical design instruction, materials and manufacturing workshops, group discussions, one-on-one guidance, real-world projects, and research excursions. Hands-on design work is supported by comprehensive workshops for woodworking, metalwork, ceramics, glass, plastics, as well as digital fabrication spaces for laser cutting and large-scale CNC machining.
Elective courses provide unique interdisciplinary possibilities, fostering collaboration with peers in the material creation and manufacturing programs (MA/MSc Craft and MA/MSc Textile) and the wider postgraduate design network. Cross-faculty options allow study within Science and Engineering, gaining expertise in industrial 3D CAD systems and cutting-edge 3D printing technologies. The Manchester Metropolitan Business School elective covers the business side of design, helping students align their creative goals with viable financial strategies.
