The BSc (Hons) Criminology and Sociology with Quantitative Methods program provides a dynamic way to explore two contemporary fields—criminology and sociology—in Manchester's lively urban setting while developing strong quantitative abilities. As a Joint Honours student, you'll be housed within the Department of Sociology, which delivers instruction in both disciplines.
This degree is designed for those passionate about understanding crime's root causes, patterns, impacts, and societal responses within broader social frameworks, while specializing in quantitative research approaches. Your first year covers foundational concepts: essential sociological and criminological theories, social inequalities, justice systems, crime policies, and modern developments like digital culture. Comprehensive research method training—both qualitative and quantitative—spans the initial two years. The final year emphasizes quantitative techniques for designing, executing, and evaluating social and criminological studies, culminating in an independent research project.
Our diverse, large-scale department prioritizes flexible specialization options to delve deeper into specific sociology and criminology topics. The curriculum consistently focuses on cultivating career-relevant competencies through practical experiences like internships, international exchange programs, and self-directed projects. Final-year students can undertake placements with relevant organizations and may have the option to extend their studies abroad for a year at one of our global partner institutions.
