As a speech and language therapist, you'll assist both children and adults dealing with various communication challenges, including speech, language, fluency, voice, or swallowing disorders. Your role involves diagnosing issues and supporting individuals in enhancing their communication abilities.
This three-year program covers diverse subjects, ranging from linguistic structures and speech production to human anatomy, developmental psychology, and the political influences on speech therapy services in communities.
Beyond studying communication theories and research about communication disorders, you'll gain hands-on training in practical therapeutic techniques.
You'll master assessment methods and intervention strategies, such as using symbol boards for nonverbal children or conducting swallowing evaluations for stroke patients to guide their rehabilitation plans.
Clinical placements occur annually, with previous opportunities including hospital work with stroke survivors, supporting adolescents with special needs in schools, and practicing in local community health centers.
