Psychology explores the study of human behavior and mental processes. This field examines both individual cognitive functions and the societal influences shaping our thoughts and interactions. Forensic Psychology specifically utilizes this knowledge within legal systems, aiding law enforcement, judicial processes, correctional facilities, and rehabilitation services in their approach to crime victims, witnesses, and perpetrators.
This program serves as the foundational training for aspiring Forensic Psychologists. Professionals in this field evaluate and provide therapy for offenders, assist crime victims and witnesses, and offer expert testimony in legal proceedings. Their responsibilities may include conducting risk evaluations for mentally ill offenders, addressing antisocial behavior in youth, or designing rehabilitation programs.
The curriculum provides comprehensive psychological training, covering essential British Psychological Society (BPS) subjects like Freud's personality framework, Piaget's cognitive development model, behavioral social influences, and individual identity formation. Alongside mastering core psychological theories and research methodologies, students investigate legal psychology topics such as criminal behavior patterns, eyewitness reliability, judicial decision-making processes, investigative techniques, and offender evaluation methods.
Practical placements demonstrate psychology's real-world applications while offering hands-on professional experience.
Manchester Met's Psychology Department offers British Psychological Society-accredited programs, having earned the society's highest recognition for excellence.
