If you possess the aptitude for degree-level studies but fall short of the entry criteria, a foundation year can serve as a stepping stone – preparing you for entry into Year 1. The curriculum is designed to boost your confidence and equip you with the necessary skills for your chosen degree program. Alongside the Academic Practice for Humanities and Social Sciences unit, which enhances your study techniques for higher education, you'll explore three humanities subjects. Upon successful completion of your Foundation Year, you'll advance directly to Year 1 of your selected honors degree. Annually, we welcome numerous students to our Foundation Year programs who demonstrate academic potential but lack the formal qualifications for direct honors degree entry. The content is customized to align with your chosen degree path. Equips you with essential study techniques and academic knowledge to confidently begin Year 1. All Humanities Foundation Year participants take the Academic Practice for Humanities and Social Sciences unit, developing crucial skills for degree-level work. Your studies will also cover Approaches to English, Modern Britain since 1945 (with optional language component), and an Introduction to Languages, Culture and Linguistics. International students follow the Foundation Year International Route, which includes extra English language support through the English and Academic Study unit, replacing Introduction to Languages, Culture and Linguistics. Instruction employs diverse methods including lectures, seminars, tutorials, and where applicable, practical workshops, computer lab sessions, and digital learning. Teaching approaches vary according to your selected degree program, with independent study forming a key component. Completing the Foundation Year ensures direct progression to Year 1 of your chosen degree. Career opportunities Successful completion of the foundation year guarantees advancement to Year 1 of your selected degree. BA (Hons) English and Film graduates pursue diverse careers, particularly in media and education, where their adaptable skills prove valuable.
