The MPhys Physics program at Loughborough provides exceptional flexibility, allowing students to explore elective modules across our comprehensive physics curriculum while undertaking an intensive research project in their final year. Designed for those seeking the broadest subject coverage in our cutting-edge laboratories, this course stands out as an ideal choice. Many consider physics the most influential science in shaping our modern world, as fundamental inventions from basic lighting to sophisticated smartphones owe their existence to this field. Physics goes beyond applications, striving to reveal nature's fundamental principles. Physicists leverage this knowledge to tackle profound questions and create innovative materials, technologies, and investigative tools - ranging from space-exploring telescopes to atomic-scale microscopes. Our curriculum draws upon Loughborough's research expertise in quantum physics, condensed matter, statistical physics, and materials science. The MPhys Physics program enables customization based on career goals, whether aiming for industrial research or PhD studies. Our teaching methodology fosters in-depth understanding through weekly integration of core physics, essential mathematics, computing, and practical laboratory work in our advanced STEMLab facility. During the first two years, students explore symmetry principles, conservation laws, electromagnetism, relativity, condensed matter, quantum theory, and materials physics, progressing to research-informed advanced modules in the third year with optional specialization. MPhys candidates culminate their studies with an advanced research project, offering the opportunity to deeply investigate a chosen physics specialization.
