Our MChem program in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry prepares you with essential skills for careers in pharmaceuticals and related fields while enhancing your scientific research capabilities.
Chemistry research is fundamental to understanding diseases and creating effective treatments. Discovering new medications to combat cancer, cardiovascular conditions, and infectious diseases continues to be a critical priority in medical science. Progress in worldwide healthcare depends on qualified graduates possessing research expertise, solid organic chemistry knowledge, and comprehensive understanding of pharmacology and biochemistry.
This MChem program serves as excellent preparation for students aspiring to participate in future drug discovery or pursue careers in industrial or academic research settings.
The Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry MChem allows you to focus on chemistry while incorporating subjects relevant to healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. During your first year, you'll establish core chemistry foundations, followed by specialized biological chemistry studies in year two, with content tailored to medical and pharmaceutical applications. No prior biology knowledge is required for these biological modules.
Year three explores advanced medicinal and biological chemistry concepts through two research projects. You'll also complete an extensive literature review to develop expertise in a specific area.
Your final MChem year focuses on original research through a dissertation and extended project, refining your scientific investigation skills.
Throughout your studies, you'll gain hands-on laboratory experience in our advanced STEMLab facilities. You can enhance your degree by opting for an industrial placement year to gain valuable work experience or exploring international study opportunities. As a Loughborough chemistry student, you'll receive excellent academic support, benefit from peer mentoring, and learn from distinguished faculty members engaged in impactful research.
