This four-year program begins with a comprehensive foundation year (Year 0) that prepares you to advance into our art or design undergraduate degrees at the School of Art, Architecture and Design. Serving as both an introduction and exploration phase, it lets you investigate various creative paths before selecting a specialization. You'll also acquire essential skills for the following three years of study.
Initially, you'll engage in diverse short studio and workshop projects involving visual concepts and hands-on creation. These exercises build foundational techniques shared across all foundation courses while fostering an experimental and adaptable mindset. Later, you'll tackle open-ended projects designed to help you develop your unique artistic vision.
Our foundation year curriculum helps you master key skills in:
observational, technical, and expressive drawing
two-dimensional and three-dimensional composition
framing, sequencing, and storytelling
studio and workshop techniques
Through specialized projects, you'll also investigate:
conceptual modeling
performance art
color theory
material studies
collage techniques
composition principles
curatorial practices
exhibition design
Complementary lectures and seminars will situate your creative work within historical, modern, theoretical, and cultural frameworks.
Regular presentations of ongoing and completed projects to peers and instructors will culminate in a year-end public exhibition. This showcase offers valuable opportunities to assess your strengths and refine your artistic focus.
