The Contemporary Arts PhD program at Lancaster University enables students to conduct research spanning diverse contemporary arts subjects and fields within the interdisciplinary setting of Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts (LICA). PhD candidates typically receive guidance from two supervisors who provide specialized feedback and support throughout their studies. Often, these supervisors come from different LICA disciplines or other university departments to ensure optimal expertise for each research project.
Students can pursue their Contemporary Arts PhD through either a conventional written dissertation or a combined approach integrating written analysis with creative practice. Our faculty includes active practitioners in art, film, theater, design, and architecture, supported by technical staff and facilities including workshops, editing suites, and specialized equipment.
As part of LICA and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), PhD students join a vibrant, cross-disciplinary research community with access to seminars, discussion groups, academic conferences, and professional development courses. The program additionally offers pathways to obtain certification in higher education instruction.
