Your doctoral research at Lancaster University can explore diverse subjects in Fine Art or interdisciplinary themes. As a PhD candidate, you'll typically work with two supervisors who provide dedicated critique and support throughout your studies. Sometimes, your secondary supervisor may come from another discipline within the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) or another university department, ensuring the best guidance for your specific research focus.
Our program has overseen innovative PhD research across various artistic domains including painting, sculpture, digital media, art-science collaborations, and community-based projects. Past research topics have encompassed: sculptural practices and new materialist theory, intersections between drawing techniques and medical imaging, therapeutic environments, material activism exploring ontological questions, Deleuzian approaches to painting, digital creative communities, modern Iranian art and identity, visual dialogues between indigenous textile patterns and abstract painting, enhancing public engagement with science through participatory art, and evolving representations of landscape.
