Residency, studio work, and theoretical study

Advance your artistic research through a tailored residency at a professional institution. Select from galleries, festivals, archives, or sites that align with your creative focus. For instance, if your work explores history and nature, you might engage with collections at Brantwood (Ruskin Museum). During your residency, you'll create a portfolio of work for your final project.

At Lancaster, enjoy 24/7 access to your personal studio space. Complement your practical work with theoretical study through reading groups, discussions, and guest artist lectures. Need to balance work with study? Our part-time option provides flexibility.

Designed for your needs

Beyond the residency, you'll take core modules and one elective tailored to your interests. Whether your focus is traditional media like drawing and painting or contemporary forms like new media and installation, our diverse faculty will support your growth. Explore themes ranging from environmental art and climate change to mobility and migration.

For broader learning, you can also enroll in courses offered by other university departments, including sociology, film, and creative writing.
