This interdisciplinary Master's program merges two crucial and demanding fields - legal studies and environmental science. The LLM in Environment and Law is co-taught by the Law School and Lancaster Environment Centre, allowing you to examine legal frameworks surrounding environmental issues and environmental dimensions within legal systems.
Our Law School houses several research centers including the Centre for International Law and Human Rights, the Centre for Crime, Law and Justice, the Centre for Law and Society, and the Centre for Child and Family Justice. The Lancaster Environment Centre collaborates with Rothamsted Research and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology as part of the Graduate School for the Environment. These prestigious centers support our postgraduate education, giving you opportunities to learn from experts conducting research in natural sciences, social sciences, and legal/socio-legal matters.
The LLM curriculum maintains an equal focus: combining Law School courses, LEC modules, and a 15,000-word thesis, allowing you to explore personal interests while developing skills to analyze issues from multiple viewpoints.
Core components include Perspectives on Environment and Development, Environmental Law or International Environmental Law, Legal Research Methods, and the LLM Dissertation. The program also incorporates Lancaster Environment Centre modules, such as field studies that directly relate to course content.
