Lancaster's combined Theatre and Chinese Studies program is delivered collaboratively by the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA). This unique program features an international placement during the third year.
The Chinese Studies component enables students to develop advanced language proficiency while exploring China's rich historical, cultural, social, and political landscape within a global framework. Students can begin Chinese studies at either introductory or advanced levels. The Theatre curriculum examines groundbreaking 20th and 21st century drama, theatre, dance, and performance through a dynamic blend of theoretical study and hands-on experience.
The first year introduces fundamental Chinese language skills and cultural context alongside core theatre concepts and practical techniques, culminating in a collaborative performance project. Students also select an additional minor subject from an approved course list.
In the second year, students advance their language abilities while deepening their understanding of Chinese-speaking societies through the 'Shaping Chinese Society: Moments and Movements' module. They also choose an internationally-focused module that fosters global comparative analysis. These are complemented by specialized theatre courses including Devised Theatre, Theatre for Social Change, and Theatre Practice.
