Lancaster's History and International Relations program is collaboratively taught by our History Department and the Department of Politics, Philosophy, and Religion. This interdisciplinary approach allows you to develop comprehensive expertise in both fields under the guidance of leading academics.
The curriculum focuses on global political history from 1780 onward while exploring diverse theoretical frameworks of the contemporary world. You'll examine how historical events shape international relations and vice versa, covering critical themes like diplomatic strategies, counterterrorism, religious tensions, and humanitarian issues.
Starting with foundational courses such as Historical Perspectives: Ancient to Modern and Contemporary Political Systems, you'll progress to intermediate modules like Conflict Resolution Studies and Global Relations, Environmental Security in your second year.
Your academic journey culminates with advanced coursework including Global Risk Governance, British Foreign Policy, African Geopolitics, and Political Islam in the final year.
