Lancaster's combined French Studies and Theatre program is delivered collaboratively by the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA). This four-year course features an international placement during the third year.
The French Studies component enables students to develop advanced linguistic abilities while exploring France's rich historical, cultural, social, and political landscape within a global framework. The Theatre portion introduces groundbreaking 20th and 21st century performance art through a dynamic blend of theoretical study and hands-on practice.
First-year students examine French language fundamentals alongside cultural studies while being introduced to essential theatre concepts and techniques, culminating in a collaborative performance piece. Students also select an additional minor subject to complement their studies.
During the second year, language proficiency is further enhanced through deeper exploration of Francophone cultures, politics, and history. Students choose from internationally-focused modules that encourage comparative analysis of European and global contexts. These are paired with specialized theatre courses including Avant-Garde Performance, Contemporary Dance, and British Theatre: National Identity (1945-2000).
