Lancaster's combined French Studies and History program is delivered through a collaboration between the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Department of History. This course features an international study abroad component during the third year.
The French Studies curriculum enables you to develop advanced language proficiency while gaining comprehensive knowledge of France's historical, cultural, social, and political landscape within a global framework. The History component enhances your analytical skills through modules covering British, European, and American world history.
In your first year, you'll examine French language and culture alongside a foundational History module. Additionally, you may select either a History elective or a minor subject from another discipline.
During Year 2, you'll advance your language capabilities while delving deeper into the culture, politics, and history of French-speaking regions. The program offers internationally-focused modules that encourage comparative analysis of European and global contexts, which you'll combine with core requirements and optional courses.
