Lancaster's combined French Studies and English Literature program is delivered through a collaboration between the Department of Languages and Cultures and the Department of English and Creative Writing. This course features an international study component during the third year.
The French Studies curriculum helps you develop advanced language proficiency while providing comprehensive insights into France's historical, cultural, social, and political landscape within a global framework. The English Literature component covers diverse authors, literary styles, historical eras, movements, techniques, and critical perspectives.
In your first year, you'll examine French language and culture alongside a foundational English Literature course. You may supplement these with additional English modules like World Literature or Creative Writing, or opt for an elective from another department.
During Year 2, you'll enhance your language abilities while delving deeper into Francophone culture, politics, and history. You'll also select internationally-focused modules that encourage comparative analysis of European and global contexts, paired with core English studies and optional courses.
