Lancaster University offers a unique Film and Philosophy degree program, collaboratively taught by faculty from the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts and the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion.
This interdisciplinary program equips students with knowledge and analytical tools to examine films as significant cultural objects. You'll explore cinema's artistic value within our visually-driven society while discovering links between film, contemporary art, theater, and music. While academically focused, the program includes hands-on opportunities to create digital films using university equipment during each year of study.
The first-year philosophy course, 'Introduction to Philosophy,' covers essential philosophical concepts across multiple traditions - including Continental, Analytic, and non-Western perspectives. This comprehensive foundation not only prepares students for advanced philosophical study but also serves as a valuable standalone introduction to diverse philosophical approaches throughout history.
During your second and final years, you can select from various philosophy modules such as Continental Philosophy, Logic and Language, Aesthetics, and Moral Philosophy. Additional module options are available through the PPR department's website.
