This four-year undergraduate program is jointly offered by our Department of Linguistics and English Language and Department of Languages and Cultures. The International Placement Year allows you to fully engage with Chinese language and culture. No prior Chinese language experience is required, as we provide an intensive beginner's course.
Our Chinese Studies program focuses on achieving true fluency while examining China's rich history, culture, political landscape, and social context. Your English Language curriculum will cover both functional aspects of English and traditional linguistic components including vocabulary, grammar, and phonetics.
The initial year introduces the Chinese language within its cultural framework alongside a foundational English language module. Students may also select a minor subject from an approved list.
In the second year, you'll enhance your language abilities through parallel Chinese oral and written skills modules at matching proficiency levels. The program delves deeper into the culture, politics, and history of Chinese-speaking regions while offering globally-focused comparative studies. These are complemented by core English language studies in Grammar and Phonetics, plus optional English language modules.
