The MA Illustration program at Kingston School of Art adopts a research-driven and analytical perspective on image creation and visual narratives. We interpret visual storytelling in its widest sense, forging links and establishing connections among images, text, contexts, objects, individuals, and locations. Our focus lies in how research-based methods of image creation can produce new knowledge, while valuing the creative process itself as a means of generating meaning. Through a carefully designed curriculum exploring concepts of precision, originality, context, and accessibility within the field, we guide students in developing insightful, challenging, and enlightening visual narratives.
The varied perspectives and backgrounds our students contribute are fundamental to our mission of scrutinizing and transforming conventional illustration methods. We encourage critical discussion about the responsibilities, ethical considerations, and worldwide influence of visual communication across both professional and public spheres.
Our program aligns with SHAPE (Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts for People and the Economy) - a British Academy initiative that highlights these disciplines as 'a dynamic and encompassing approach to educate, demonstrate, and motivate people about the significance of comprehending our human experience.'
