The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures provides exceptional PhD research opportunities in Comparative Literature, spanning modern, medieval, and classical works across major Western European languages as well as contemporary languages from India, Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. Key research areas encompass African literary studies, Middle Eastern literature, Romanticism and revolutionary texts, gender studies, and classical reception studies. Our department fosters a dynamic research community where postgraduate students actively participate. In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), our research environment achieved a perfect 100% 'world-leading' (4) rating, while our research impact scored 87.5% in the combined 'world-leading' and 'internationally excellent' (3) categories.

Qualification Requirements

Master of Arts degree with Merit and a minimum of 65% overall in a subject in which the study of literature plays a significant part; applicants must have the linguistic skills relevant to their research project, or be willing to develop them. Overseas students will be required to demonstrate IELTS of 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in reading & writing and 6.0 in listening & speaking. TOEFL IBT 100 overall with a minimum of 25 in writing, 23 in reading and 20 in each of the other skills.
