Individual health is shaped by a combination of genetic factors, lifestyle choices, and environmental influences. Genomics explores how genes function and impact bodily growth, development, and overall functioning. By examining genetic and genomic data, healthcare professionals can assess disease risks, predict responses to infections (such as COVID-19), guide cancer diagnosis and treatment, address cardiovascular conditions, and tailor medical care to each patient.
The NHS aims to become a global leader in applying advanced genomic technologies for predicting and diagnosing both inherited and acquired diseases, while customizing treatments and interventions. This program lets you explore how genetics and genomics are transforming medicine as healthcare shifts toward personalized approaches.
Genetics stands out as a unifying field that contributes to understanding all disease processes. The NHS is dedicating significant resources to integrate genomics into healthcare, implementing genome-based diagnostics and advancing future genetic therapies.
