Global development stands as a fundamental priority in international policy, embodied in the United Nations' 2015 Sustainable Development Goals. These objectives strive for worldwide harmony, economic growth, and environmental conservation through collaborative efforts. However, ongoing conflicts, security threats, climate impacts, pervasive poverty, and mass migration present significant obstacles to achieving these aims.
This program delves into urgent global development concerns and practical approaches to modern challenges, with special emphasis on the intersections between development and both security conflicts and environmental/climate issues.
Students will examine foundational theories of international development, trace its historical progression, and analyze its contemporary evolution. The curriculum then focuses on current development practices, exploring how various entities - from governments and international bodies to NGOs and local communities - can formulate effective responses to critical global problems. This comprehensive approach provides both conceptual understanding and analytical tools to navigate today's interconnected development landscape while building expertise to address major international concerns.
The program features three mandatory components: core theories of global development, fundamental International Relations concepts, and research methodologies in this discipline.
Students then customize their learning through five elective modules, allowing specialization in preferred areas. Options range from security-focused studies on post-conflict recovery to economic or environmental aspects of development. Learners may select theoretically oriented courses or empirically driven research modules, all taught by distinguished scholars with established expertise.
The capstone dissertation offers students the opportunity to conduct in-depth investigation into a self-selected development topic, building on their specialized interests.
