Renewable energy has seen remarkable worldwide expansion in recent years. This growth, combined with the shift toward low-carbon economies, technological progress, and evolving policies, creates a need for qualified experts capable of guiding and managing the transition to sustainable energy sources.
Our online MSc in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Transition prepares graduates with the necessary expertise to contribute meaningfully to the fast-evolving renewables sector. Tailored to meet the needs of renewable energy developers, this program enables you to address transition challenges, optimize economic benefits, and overcome regulatory and environmental barriers. It serves industries within the circular economy, including renewable energy firms, communities, and organizations working toward net-zero goals and climate action.
Graduates will gain a versatile skillset covering renewable energy technology, integration, and project development, unlocking diverse career opportunities in renewable energy firms, government bodies, consultancies, research institutions, and nonprofits. You'll develop a deep understanding of facilitating equitable transitions for businesses, organizations, and communities.
This program, offered by the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT), focuses on core aspects of energy transition and transition engineering:
• Net-zero carbon policies and economics.
• Renewable energy technologies, development processes, and grid integration.
• Energy transition in transportation, primary industries, construction, and manufacturing.
• Climate action through organizational, entrepreneurial, and technical shifts.
• Transition engineering—implementing sustainable decarbonization initiatives.
Program Duration
Online Learning: 2.5-8 years. Typically, PgDip students finish in 2-3 years, while MSc students complete their studies in 3-8 years. Most online learners aim to graduate within 3-4 years.
Online Learning Delivery
Course materials are accessible via our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), connecting you with faculty through videos, webinars, readings, assessments, and discussion forums. Tutors offer academic support via phone, Skype, or email, mirroring the on-campus experience.
The MSc Renewable and Sustainable Energy Transition equips graduates with interdisciplinary skills for the renewables industry, addressing developer needs in maximizing economic returns while navigating regulatory, environmental, and financial challenges.
Our alumni hold pivotal roles across renewable energy technology firms, project developers, utilities, consultancies, governments, regulators, and NGOs.
Masters (MSc) level entry applicants must have one of the following: Minimum of 2:2 honours degree or equivalent academic qualification in a related subject area. For postgraduate conversion courses, non-related degrees will be considered. Corporate (or chartered) membership of relevant professional institutions will also be considered. PG Diploma level entry applicants must have an ordinary degree in a related subject area and relevant post qualification industry experience. If English is not the applicant's first language a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required with all elements passed at 6.0 or above. TOEFL iBT - 79 (Reading 18, Listening 17, Speaking 20, Writing 21).
