The MA (Hons) in British Sign Language and Applied Language Studies equips you with professional skills for engaging with deaf communities using BSL. Starting from beginner level, this program develops your signing abilities to professional proficiency through immersive coursework. You'll gain essential cultural, social, political, and linguistic understanding that opens doors to diverse career paths such as education, advocacy, counseling, research, and community work with deaf individuals. The program also establishes a strong foundation for advanced studies in deaf education, sign language interpretation, or related disciplines. Over four years, intensive training prepares you for professional BSL applications. During your final year, you can tailor your studies by selecting from specialized courses including contemporary workforce issues, employment relations, applied linguistics, translation studies, and diversity management. A highlight of the third year is a practical placement with Deaf-led organizations, where you'll enhance your BSL fluency while working directly with the Deaf community. This experience builds both language competence and intercultural awareness, fostering self-reliance and transferable skills under tutor guidance. Your academic journey culminates in an in-depth dissertation on a BSL-related topic of your choice. This independent research project significantly expands your expertise while developing critical thinking, analytical abilities, and academic writing skills. You'll present your original findings in scholarly format, demonstrating comprehensive understanding of your selected subject area.
