The BSc in Brewing and Distilling offers a distinctive chance to build a foundation in engineering and science while delving into the processes of beverage production at an undergraduate level. As the sole program of its kind in the UK, it allows you to customize your STEM expertise specifically for the drinks sector. Throughout your studies, you'll engage with a diverse curriculum spanning brewing and distilling, biology, process engineering, mathematics, beverage microbiology, biochemistry, and more, with additional options in business, finance, and sustainability. Core subjects include cereal science, yeast microbiology, process technology, quality control, and flavor analysis, equipping you with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. You'll establish a strong grasp of scientific and technological fundamentals, applying them to malting, brewing, and distilling contexts. The program covers industry principles, emerging trends, and global perspectives while addressing policy, legislation, and ethical considerations in alcohol production. This prepares you for diverse roles in a thriving sector—Scotland's whisky industry alone employs over 11,000 people directly, highlighting strong graduate demand. Practical training occurs in our on-site brewery, distillery, and labs, ensuring industry-ready expertise. Faculty members actively shape the beverage sector through board roles and government advisory positions, keeping coursework aligned with real-world developments.
