Our Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) program delves into the core principles of chemical and process engineering. This scientific, mathematical, and engineering foundation equips you with practical skills that industries actively seek. Upon completing your degree, you can further develop these competencies to pursue a career as a professional engineer. Heriot-Watt achieved top marks in Scotland for Chemical Engineering in overall student satisfaction according to the 2023 National Student Survey, while also ranking first in Scotland and second in the UK for teaching quality and learning opportunities (NSS 2023). The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 placed Heriot-Watt second in Scotland and eighth in the UK for Chemical Engineering. The BEng in Chemical Engineering spans four years, with the option to transition to the more advanced five-year MEng program upon completion. This career-oriented degree features specialized tracks in pharmaceutical chemistry, computational chemistry, biology, or materials and nanoscience, allowing you to tailor your education to your professional goals. During your final BEng year, you'll participate in a collaborative project that applies your accumulated knowledge. The department covers your student membership to the Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) as part of the program. The Research Institute for Biological, Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering concentrates on four primary areas: Biological Chemistry, Bioengineering, Brewing and Distilling, and Health Research. Meanwhile, the IMPEE research institute strives for excellence in four key research domains: Biomedical Engineering, Digital Engineering, Energy Harvesting and Conversion, and Multiphase Flow.
