The MLitt Art Writing program centers on two key components: a distinctive approach to art writing as an interdisciplinary studio practice and the chance to showcase new work publicly through collaborations with external partners. Focusing on reflective, practice-led research, the program responds to growing interest in innovative critical writing formats and evolving connections between writing and artistic creation.
Art writing combines creative, philosophical, critical, and theoretical methods—writing about art, with art, and as art itself. Bridging visual arts, criticism, art history, and literature, this interdisciplinary domain values both creative output and critical dialogue. Students explore art writing as a developing field, investigating its cultural expressions, literary styles, historical roots, and contextual frameworks. Through independent exploration within Glasgow's vibrant creative community, students cultivate and share original approaches to critical writing, reading, editing, and research. The program emphasizes writing with curiosity, expertise, and intent, while engaging with the broad spectrum of art criticism and cross-disciplinary writing.
This one-year postgraduate course, housed in the School of Fine Art, offers full-time or part-time options, leading to a master's degree after 12 or 24 months of study.
