The BSc (Hons) Games Development program offers specialization in two core areas of the gaming sector: game design or software development. This degree equips you with the essential expertise, practical abilities, and hands-on experience to thrive as a professional in the gaming industry. You'll choose between two specialized tracks, culminating in either a BSc (Hons) Games Development (Design) or BSc (Hons) Games Development (Software) qualification. During your first year, you'll master fundamental game creation principles while learning to build prototypes using industry-standard tools like Unity and Unreal engines. Following this foundation year, you'll select your preferred specialization path.
Game Design Specialization: Throughout years two to four, you'll focus exclusively on game design through a combination of solo and team-based projects. Individual coursework will enhance your skills in narrative design, game systems, user research, player psychology, serious games, and engine-based development while helping you build an impressive portfolio. Collaborative projects will involve working alongside students from related programs like Computer Games (Art and Animation) and 3D Design for Visual Environments to develop games for academic or professional clients.
Game Software Development Specialization: From year two onward, you'll concentrate on programming aspects through a mix of independent and group modules. Solo projects will deepen your knowledge in AI programming, mobile game development, C++ with OpenGL, networked games, and engine programming while contributing to your professional portfolio. Team projects will bring you together with peers from complementary disciplines such as Computer Games (Art and Animation) and 3D Design for Visual Environments to create games for institutional or industry partners.
