The degree is granted upon successfully completing an original research thesis, which typically takes three to four years depending on the field of study, with guidance from your supervisor. During the first year, students generally focus on expanding their knowledge through coursework, seminars, and extensive reading. Those affiliated with the Centre for Particle Theory usually attend CPT lectures in their initial year. Applicants will be assigned two supervisors—while most receive their supervisory assignments upon acceptance, the Centre for Particle Theory group determines supervisory teams later, through mutual agreement between faculty and students once lectures have begun.

Qualification Requirements
The standard minimum entry requirements for Postgraduate Research are an upper second class honours degree (2:1) from a UK university or an equivalent degree qualification from an overseas university. A Masters qualification is a requirement for entry on our PhD programme. Evidence of research skills and/or experience is useful. For international applicants whose first language isn’t English, we require a UKVI/IELTS score of 7 (with no component under 6.5). Applicants who have not reached this level, can be admitted to a 6-, 10- or 20-week pre-sessional English Language course, with the course length depending on your current UKVI/IELTS score (which must be over 6.0, with no component under 5.5). TOEFL iBT: 92 (no component under 23); 176 (minimum of 169 per component) in Cambridge Scale (CPE or CAE; Pearson Academic (PTE): 62 (with no less than 56 in each Communicative Skill).
