Each year, approximately 30-35 students commence postgraduate studies at Durham, with most aiming to pursue a Ph.D. This doctoral program typically spans 3 to 4 years of full-time study, varying by specific course requirements. Candidates earn their degree after submitting a thesis and successfully defending it in an oral examination. To maintain academic progress, the university implements quarterly and annual assessments along with a digital Staff-Student blog system that documents regular supervision meetings, ensuring students meet expectations before advancing to subsequent study years.

Qualification Requirements

The standard minimum entry requirements for Postgraduate Research are an upper second class honours degree (2:1) from a UK university or an equivalent degree qualification from an overseas university. A Masters qualification is a requirement for entry on our PhD programme. Evidence of research skills and/or experience is useful. For international applicants whose first language isn’t English, we require a UKVI/IELTS score of 7 (with no component under 6.5). Applicants who have not reached this level, can be admitted to a 6-, 10- or 20-week pre-sessional English Language course, with the course length depending on your current UKVI/IELTS score (which must be over 6.0, with no component under 5.5). TOEFL iBT: 92 (no component under 23); 176 (minimum of 169 per component) in Cambridge Scale (CPE or CAE; Pearson Academic (PTE): 62 (with no less than 56 in each Communicative Skill).
