From designing lessons to creating the ideal classroom atmosphere, from fostering motivation to handling classroom behavior, the PGCE Secondary English program prepares you to be a skilled and creative English educator capable of nurturing a passion for language in young learners.
This course explores the breadth of English as a subject across the 11-16 age group, enhancing both your subject expertise and teaching methods as you learn strategies to make English engaging and accessible in educational settings.
Upon completing the PGCE, you'll earn a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Durham University and qualify for Qualified Teacher Status. The QTS component is accredited by Newcastle University and granted by the Department of Education.
Our program combines academic research with hands-on classroom experience, setting you on the path to success as a new teacher. We integrate the Core Content Framework throughout the PGCE to ensure you're fully prepared for the Early Career Framework, which will guide your first two years in the profession.
University-led sessions center on weekly teaching themes, complemented by subject-specific workshops taught by university and school partnership experts. Professional Studies classes deepen your grasp of key educational concepts and classroom techniques, helping you reflect on your teaching style and growth as an educator.
