This integrated Master's program serves as the initial pathway to achieving Chartered Physicist certification. Ideal for students seeking an accredited qualification that opens doors to advanced studies, research positions in physics, or careers in science, finance, engineering, and IT.
Durham's undergraduate physics programs provide exceptional flexibility. Students can choose from four IOP-accredited options: MPhys degrees in Physics, Physics and Astronomy, or Theoretical Physics, plus a three-year BSc in Physics - all sharing a common first-year curriculum.
With careful module selection, students can transfer between these programs until the conclusion of their second year. The four-year course can be extended to five years by adding either an industrial placement or international study opportunity with our partner institutions.
Year 1 establishes essential foundations in physics theory, mathematical techniques, and laboratory competencies needed for advanced study. Beginning in Year 2, students can delve deeper into specialized areas like astrophysics, quantum theory, or physics' societal applications.
Year 3 shifts focus toward practical applications through project-based learning and specialized modules aligned with individual career goals. The final year culminates with an original research project and advanced modules that push the boundaries of physics knowledge.
