Our research spans diverse specializations across multiple regions and time periods, from Britain and Europe to West Asia, Egypt, North Africa, South Asia, and East Asia. We explore everything from the Paleolithic era to modern times, examining materials ranging from human remains to iconography while advancing both scientific techniques and theoretical approaches. This rich research environment thrives through dynamic, interdisciplinary Research and Impact Groups that encourage collaboration.
We provide specialized research supervision for MA, MSc by Research (MRes), MPhil, and PhD programs, available through full-time or part-time study. Durham boasts exceptional library resources, and our postgraduate researchers benefit from regular departmental meetings and access to the university's numerous interdisciplinary research centers. PhD candidates can choose between a conventional 100,000-word dissertation or a publication-based portfolio.
