Security cameras, satellite feeds, smartphones, smart homes, vehicles, and workplaces - we're immersed in data daily. Concurrently, technological progress has democratized data science, presenting fresh avenues to understand human behavior and societal dynamics. As businesses and institutions leverage these tools to enhance understanding and inform strategic choices, the need for proficient data scientists has surged dramatically.
Responding to this demand, we've developed the Master of Data Science (Social Analytics) - a conversion program designed to provide essential skills in data acquisition, processing, analysis, and visualization. This pathway enables graduates from non-quantitative backgrounds like social sciences, arts, or humanities to pursue rewarding careers in data science.
Our MDS program delivers cutting-edge data science education taught by active researchers shaping various industries. Foundational modules shared across our MDS curriculum develop comprehensive statistical and machine learning competencies, while specialized components merge data science with social science methodologies. You'll gain expertise in designing social data research projects and effectively communicating findings for maximum impact across diverse contexts.
The curriculum progresses from fundamental introductory modules to sophisticated modern techniques including R-based statistical modeling, Python programming, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and neural networks. Social analytics components focus on specialized approaches for social data analysis alongside the theoretical frameworks needed for their proper application.
The program culminates with a substantial research project, allowing you to apply acquired skills to a social science topic of your choice. The Durham Research Methods Centre facilitates project partnerships with local government agencies, NHS Trusts, and health/social care organizations.
