The Master of Arts in Social Research Methods offers comprehensive training in research methodologies across the social sciences, with specialized focus areas available in social policy, criminology, sociology, or social work.
This program forms part of a broader suite of research-focused postgraduate degrees offered university-wide. Graduates gain versatile interdisciplinary skills that open doors to academic careers, public sector roles, NGO positions, charity work, business opportunities, and beyond. The degree also serves as excellent preparation for advanced social science research.
Students examine both theoretical foundations and practical applications of research, studying diverse methodologies and their underlying principles. The program develops crucial competencies in both quantitative and qualitative approaches, equipping students to conduct specialized social research in their chosen discipline. Certain module combinations (subject to availability) provide accredited training through the North East and Northern Ireland Doctoral Training Partnership.
Housed within the Sociology Department, the program benefits from the expertise of two leading research centers: the Centre for Social Justice and Community Action and the Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse. Students learn from faculty members who are actively shaping their fields through cutting-edge research initiatives.
