The MA in Medieval and Early Modern Studies provides the essential training and expertise needed to begin your PhD research path.
Offered through Durham's Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IMEMS), this program allows you to deepen your specialization in a specific historical era.
Focusing on societal and intellectual developments from approximately 300-1800 AD, it's designed for graduates with backgrounds in archaeology, classics, history, literature, languages, philosophy, or theology.
This one-year full-time or two-year part-time program includes two foundational courses on interpreting medieval and early modern history, plus elective options spanning topics from Franciscan theology to Southeast Asian power structures (1400-1800). The degree concludes with a research dissertation on your chosen topic.

Students immediately join an active research community, including the dynamic MEMSA postgraduate group, which organizes lectures, workshops, and masterclasses with leading scholars.
