This unique BA program blends static and dynamic imagery with rigorous academic inquiry and hands-on skill building. The curriculum reflects faculty expertise covering artistic eras from ancient Rome to contemporary times, with an expansive geographical scope that's nearly worldwide. While focusing on Western artistic traditions, the program equally emphasizes visual culture from the Middle East, Russian-speaking Eurasia, and East Asia.
The program's exploration of visual concepts and imagery is deeply informed by this cross-border viewpoint. You'll collaborate with faculty for whom global awareness is intrinsic, while benefiting from access to the University's exceptional Oriental Museum collections, its prestigious Western art holdings, and the specialized knowledge of its curatorial team. No prior art background is necessary - only an eagerness to discover the dynamic realm of visual arts and cinema.
Students can examine the visual culture of diverse regions including Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America. The program also provides significant language study options through its administrative home in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. You may opt to extend the three-year program to four years by adding either a placement year or study abroad experience, thereby broadening your educational horizons.
Practical and career-oriented elements form another key component. Through elective modules, you may participate in field excursions, internships, and skill-development courses like film production, gaining valuable understanding of how visual culture is created, displayed, and traded in professional contexts.
