Exploring Philosophy and Theology enables you to engage with and examine fundamental questions about human existence—questions like "What constitutes a fulfilling life?" and "What are humanity's core beliefs about the world and our role within it?" These interconnected fields, with their many shared themes, are ideally suited for joint study.

The philosophy component of your degree will provide you with the tools to critically reflect on essential aspects of a meaningful life, exploring how personal well-being connects to social bonds, family, community, political structures, and cultural influences. At Durham, you'll pursue one of the most comprehensive philosophy programs nationwide, gaining proficiency in both analytical Anglo-American philosophy and continental philosophical traditions.

Through theology coursework, you'll investigate how humans throughout history have developed—and continue to maintain—core beliefs about the universe and our place within it. This aspect of human experience will be analyzed using diverse methodological approaches. You may also opt to extend your studies with a placement year or international exchange, expanding your program from three to four years.

Since philosophy is unfamiliar to many undergraduates, your first year will include foundational courses covering essential philosophical concepts. You'll also complete introductory theology modules during this period.

During your second year, you'll deepen your understanding through required philosophy and theology courses while selecting from an array of elective modules in both disciplines.

Your final year features a dissertation project, offering the opportunity for in-depth, self-directed research on a subject of your choosing.
