This dynamic BA Single Honours program allows students to pursue their enthusiasm for history while gaining archaeological expertise in material culture, museum collections, structures, landscapes, and world heritage from historic periods. Concentrating primarily on the archaeology of the past two millennia, the program emphasizes interdisciplinary education and skill development, offering students the chance to blend modules from Archaeology and History departments throughout all three years, with options to include subjects from other disciplines.
The curriculum integrates classroom instruction and small-group seminars with hands-on laboratory work, collections-based training, field trips, and participation in an annual field school. Students can select from specialized modules exploring historic-period archaeology across Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, East and Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean, and the Middle East, alongside thematic courses examining aspects of the early modern and modern eras, including colonization, transatlantic relations, slavery, commerce, and industrialization.
During the first year, students build fundamental archaeological knowledge and practical abilities. In subsequent years, they delve deeper into specific topics and methodologies, collaborating closely with faculty while preparing an independent research project in their final year.
This program also offers a CIfA (Chartered Institute for Archaeologists) accredited pathway. Opting for an accredited undergraduate degree is recognized as the initial step toward professional certification in archaeology. To earn CIfA accreditation, students complete modules that provide essential theoretical and practical training for careers in the UK's commercial archaeology sector.
