This combined degree program allows you to blend courses from our Ancient History curriculum with medieval and modern History modules provided by the History Department. While the distribution between departments is roughly balanced, you can adjust your module selections in the third year to focus more on one area based on your preferences.
During your first year, you'll explore the ancient Greek world and early imperial Rome through multiple lenses (not just historical) while learning to analyze various types of evidence. This foundation prepares you for specialized historical modules in your second and third years, covering ancient politics and society, with opportunities to complement these studies with ancient literature, language, and philosophy courses.
In the History Department, you'll examine medieval, early modern, and contemporary history, with optional courses available for studying global cultures.
Your academic journey culminates in a dissertation, where you'll synthesize your knowledge and skills while focusing on a topic of personal interest, developing as an independent scholar. This project enables you to engage with cutting-edge research at an advanced level within these historical fields.
Both departments encourage participation in diverse research activities, including specialized seminars, distinguished guest lectures, and events hosted by student-run History and Classics organizations.
