This program will guide you through various aspects of prescribing, covering clinical abilities, diagnostic thinking, patient interaction techniques, communication methods, the psychological dimensions of prescribing, and legal/ethical factors in medication decisions. Typically completed in six months, motivated learners with adequate availability can finish all coursework and evaluations in just four months. Alternatively, a 12-month pathway is available for those preferring a more gradual pace. Note these durations apply solely to study periods - assessment grading and verification processes require additional time. Your learning journey combines independent study, organized digital coursework, and practical application, featuring mandatory participation in eight small-group seminar days. These intimate sessions foster meaningful dialogue between pharmacy professionals and educators, facilitating thoughtful consideration of prescribing's evolving role while developing self-evaluation and analytical skills for non-physician prescribers. The curriculum also mandates a minimum 12-day (90-hour) supervised clinical placement with your assigned Designated Prescribing Practitioner, building competency within your specialty area. To complement these experiences, our user-friendly digital platforms facilitate self-paced study and enable ongoing interaction with peers and instructors.

Qualification Requirements

  • Applicants need to be registered as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or, in Northern Ireland, with the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
  • Applicants should be in good standing with the GPhC and/or PSNI and any other healthcare regulator with which they are registered.
  • Applicants should hold a third-class honours (3rd) or above in Pharmacy or equivalent degree qualification.
  • Applicants must have relevant experience in a UK pharmacy setting and be able to recognise, understand and articulate the skills and attributes required by a prescriber to act as the foundation of their prescribing practice whilst training.
  • Applicants should undertake their learning in practice in the UK or Northern Ireland.
  • For the purposes of developing their independent prescribing practice applicants must identify an area of clinical or therapeutic practice on which to base their learning.
